BUSINESS ETHICS AND VALUES @ SURE ETNIQUE TRAVEL

Businessmen are constantly confronted to make choices in their business. Ethics is about how we meet the challenge or do the right thing, even though this may cost more than we may want to pay. Making money only, does not oblige people to forfeit their honour or their conscience. However,  people might sell their souls and live with a good conscience on the proceeds.

We often find that business values are bent or stretched to motivate a certain less ethical choice made in the world of business. As you sometimes will have within the same family, a specific differentiation of values, in the same way one might find it within a partnership, franchise or grouping in business. Ultimately, business ethics should be neither negotiable, nor flexible, but clearly defined and adhered to by all within a specific business.

We at SURE ETNIQUE TRAVEL pride ourselves in the way we have conducted business for the past 10 years. Although the travel scene in Bloemfontein will change within the next few months, we will remain an autonomous, independent business owned by the same people who originally initiated it some 10 years ago.

As in the past, we endeavour to provide a true professional service, based on specific values, to all our customers. You can expect full transparency on all our business deals with you, full dedication to your requirements by our consultants, as well as specific personal travel information and inputs seldom experienced within our industry and surely never on the internet! Those familiar to our personal service, will know what we mean… (refer letter Prof Tienie Crous).

Travel Stories:

LUXEMBOURG - A country and a city

A small country often overlooked when planning an overseas vacation, is the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, southeast of Belgium and between France and Germany. During a visit in June this year my wife and I discovered that it indeed is worth a visit. Packed into its small territory of 2 586 sq km you will find beautiful scenery, a world famous wine region, many impressive medieval castles and churches, interesting villages, and historical artifacts dating back to the time of the Roman occupation. And the capital, Luxembourg City, is most impressive.

Luxembourg was once part of Charlemagne’s empire, but became an independent state in 963. But over the centuries different countries such as Spain, France, Austria and the Netherlands held the country. In 1815 it became a grand duchy, lost half of its territory to Belgium in 1839, but gained a larger measure of autonomy, attaining full independence in 1867. During both World Wars Germany occupied the country, but Allied troops liberated it in 1944. The so called Battle of the Bulge brought mass destruction of much of the Grand Duchy, but within a remarkably short time after the war the damage was restored.

Luxembourg is the world’s only grand duchy, home to an estimated 480 222 residents (July 2007), with about a fifth residing in Luxembourg City. It is a hereditary constitutional monarchy, with HRH Grand Duke Henri ascending the throne in October 2000. He and his wife, Maria Teresa, are the parents of five children, with Crown Prince Guillaume the eldest. The country and city is ranked by a leading worldwide consulting organization as the world’s top for personal safety and security, and enjoys an extraordinary high  standard of living, with the highest or second highest income per capita of any country in the world (depending on which source you consult). It is therefore no wonder that about 122 000 foreign cross-border workers commute to Luxembourg daily or weekly - primarily from France, Belgium, and Germany. It has the highest concentration of banks with their headquarters in the European community. The life expectancy of all its citizens is 79.03 years (females 82,52 years!). Literacy is 100%. All 5 227 km. of its roadways are paved. Gasoline prices are the lowest Europe, so fill up before you leave!

The topography varies: in the central region gently rolling hills with broad, shallow valleys, the green mountains of the Ardennes in the north with its deep wooded valleys spiked with sharp, craggy hills crowned with castles, and the steep slopes down to the Moselle’s flood plain in the south. Most of the country can be seen on day trips from the capital - nowhere more than a couple of hours’ journey away. With moderate temperatures (mild winters, cool summers) Luxembourg is a great destination any time of year, but the best times are between mid-April through mid-October. Three languages are primarily spoken: the national language Luxembourgish, German and French. However, English is also widely spoken, especially in the city and surrounding areas.

The history of Luxembourg City is closely connected with that of the country itself. It originated in Roman times when camps were established at the crossroads of trading routes between Metz and Liege, and Trier and Paris. It is situated on one of the most spectacular sites of any capital in Europe: on a rocky promontory where the valleys of the Pètrusse and Alzette Rivers, which meet here, forms deep canyons around, natural obstacles to invading forces. Today only a small portion of the original fortifications can be seen; now beautiful parks cover the terrain once occupied by strong forts, and many bridges span the gullies, such as the Adolphe Bridge (1899 - 1903), separating the Old Town from the modern one.

We entered Luxembourg on the afternoon of June 22 by car from France to the south. When we reached the city, we saw thousands of people crowding into the centre city. Every parking space was taken up, and all parking garages were fully occupied. We had to park our car more than a kilometer away from our hotel. There we discovered that we had arrived on the eve of the National Day! Since the 18th century this day was celebrated on the sovereign’s birthday. In 1961 it was decided that due to the weather this celebration would be transferred to the 23 June of each year. Festivities commence on the evening before. We could not believe our luck!

The day began with the changing of the guard (which we unfortunately did not see) in front of the Palais Grand-Ducal. But at 22:00 that evening there was a torch-lit parade through the center of the Old Town. The streets were decorated with banners and colourful lights, and packed with people celebrating, dancing, with rock, pop and folklore concerts, as well as dj’s and street musicians entertaining the crowds, and livening up the streets, bars and cafes until dawn. At 24:00 the crowd gathered at the central square for a dazzling fireworks display.

The next morning we got up early, and walked to the nearby Old Town. The streets were empty, with everyone taking the day of and sleeping late. To our amazement the same streets which were a few hours ago packed with throngs of celebrators had already been spotlessly cleaned and washed! We were in time to see the beginning of the day’s celebrations with a military parade, followed by a Te Deum service at the majestic Cathèdrale Notre-Dame (for the royal family, government officials and special guests only. A red carpet was rolled out along which the celebrities entered the cathedral. The monarch and his wife arrived in his official vehicle bearing the royal flag on the bonnet. I took the opportunity of taking a photograph of my wife standing next to this luxurious Bentley! After the Te Deum, a 101-gun salute was fired outside the cathedral. Celebrations open to the public took place afterwards at various locations, with interesting parades and marches.

There is not enough space available to describe the main sights to be seen in this interesting city. I can only mention the marvelous views to be found from around every bend along the cliff path, called “the most beautiful balcony in Europe”, the Palace and its surroundings, the Cathedral, whose slender black spires dominates the city’s skyline,  the remaining fortifications , and museums like the National and Pescatore museums.

A very economical way to see Luxembourg and its major attractions is to buy the Luxembourg Card, providing free access to the national public transportation network, free admission to 40 attractions, and discounts for others. The price is very reasonable - only EUR 10 for the one-day individual card.

We drove north through Luxembourg, from where we entered Belgium. On the way we admired the beautiful countryside, sometimes turning of to some of the smaller towns, like the beautiful Clerveaux built around a loop of a river, and topped with a castle dating from the 12th century. The Battle of the Bulge Museum inside recounts this battle. The castle also exhibits a moving collection of photographs by Edward Steichen, called the Family of Man.  Next to the castle stands a Medieval Gothic Cathedral.

We did not have the time to visit the valley of the River Moselle, which forms the border with Germany, and where the excellent Moselle wines are produced. However, we took the opportunity to taste some of the excellent white wines produced there, like the fruity Rieslings, the delicate Pinot Blancs and the flowery Gewürtztraminer. I think we should return to Luxembourg to taste more of this fascinating country!

OUR INBOX

We’re listening to what YOU have to say

  • "Dear Johann, I sincerely wish to express my thanks to you and your staff for the excellent service and support rendered during my colleague, Rudolf van Buuren and my official visit to Turku (Finland), Bremen (Germany), Vienna and ulmitately Kufstein in Austria, during June 2007.  I can modestly claim to have travelled all over the world, making use of the services of several agencies throughout the years.  However, what I experienced during this visit, is in a class of its own, far above anything else!  The trouble that your staff went to in preparing our travel arrangements in every detail, is unmatched.  In all circumstances and at every airport, we never doubted the outcome of our next step. We would literally study our itinerary beforehand and then know exactly what to expect at each airport or hotel.  However, even being an experienced traveller, there is always the unexpected and the unforeseen. It felt to me that Etnique always had solutions ready for such occasions.  Although I prefer making my own arrangements and being in control of my comings and goings, your staff have also foreseen that. Thanks for treating me as an individual and listening to my needs, thanks for not deciding what I must do and for never letting me feel one of the herd that must be satisfied with the standard format.  Unique, different service distinguishes Etnique from the rest. My congratulations!"
Prof Tienie Crous, Dean, Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, UFS

Mooi bly, lekker dag..”
    Ima Barnard - Welkom

  • “Dear Melanie, thank you very much for your prompt and efficient attention to my USA problems. In the end I managed to sort them out with Delta. I was feeling so rotten that the cost of doing so was of little importance. I must say that Etnique has always given me the very best service, first Tessa, who was amazing, and now you. I hope we can do business again in the future although I am no longer in Bloemfontein.”
    Judge Conradie - Cape Town

  • “Hi Tessa, I did promise you an e-mail, but since then the world has just gone a little crazy, so before I trek off to Jhb tomorrow for the Gauteng reunion and Durban the next week for the Durban reunion and … I will write a short note to thank you very much for all the hard work in preparing for what turned out to be a lekker trip to England.  I enjoyed my time in London – even though I discovered that I was not used to walking around parks the size of Hyde Park.  All the arrangements for that leg of the journey were superb.  I found the train trip up to Carnforth quite an experience and as I said to you the only hitch there was having to use my best English accent to discover what to do when the main line train was delayed.  Unfortunately it rained while I was up in the North West but I must say that it is a really beautiful part of the world.  The flight back also went without a hitch even though people were trying to blow up Glasgow airport the day before.  Carol and I are talking about next year so we will be in touch some time.  Sorry no chocolate cake this time but have to work off those holiday pounds (I speak like a pommy now).

NEXT TIME - BE TRAVEL WISE...

In a world of modern technology it is exciting to visit the challenging world of travel websites: the expedias, tripadvisors and cheap flights to name a few; all which lead you to more and more options and thousands of ideas. But as easy as it is to click the mouse, it can just as easily become a travellers nightmare with many cost implications!

We are going to identify real examples clients encountered during the past few weeks to illustrate specific pitfalls in making one’s reservations on the internet, without the assistance of an experienced travel agent.

CONNECTING AIRLINE TICKETS ON THE NET

Always remember that all airlines, although controlled by the international body, IATA, have different rules and regulations regarding cost for changes, luggage allowances, on board hand luggage etc. Normal baggage allowance in the USA is 2 suitcases of a considerable size per person, each not exceeding 23 kg in weight, and cabin luggage not exceeding 18 kg per person.

Tickets for a couple were purchased on the net for a connecting flight from Toronto to NY on Delta airlines, costing US$ 180/person. Each had a normal medium sized suitcase plus a small one according to normal cabin allowance standards, and vanity bag. On this particular flight, being an interconnecting flight between Delta/Comair, the cabin facilities do not allow for the standard overhead space, and adhering to the present onboard security measures of banning of all fluids, the vanity bag is obviously not allowed in the cabin.

A Delta representative confirmed through a telephone enquiry that the excess baggage cost is US$ 50 per additional piece of luggage. On arrival at the Delta counter at Toronto airport, the passengers were informed that the charge for excess baggage is US$ 200 per item regardless of the weight.

Also remember that other low cost carriers like Ryanair and EasyJet only allow 15 kg/person as checked luggage; therefore, if you are travelling overseas, you will have to pay Euro 20/kg exceeding 15 kg! And also, if you do not fly on this specific flight, you loose the total cost of your ticket!

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION

A king-size double room at the New York Sheraton Towers in Manhattan was booked on the internet at US $199; due to unforeseen circumstances, the itinerary to NY was changed to a day later. When quoting the reference number telephonically to a lady in Ireland, they were informed that the date of the hotel reservation cannot be changed, despite the fact that there were rooms available at a cheaper rate for the following night. They were forced to make a new reservation at US $ 178 for the same accommodation.

An imprint of the credit card, used for making the internet reservation was required for “additional expenditures incurred during the stay.”

Upon arrival in the room, it was clear that it was located in the oldest part of the hotel, undergoing renovations: air conditioning not working, no wash basin plug, dirty carpets.

When complaining to reception, their comments were that they do not have authority on internet bookings! The next morning a reconciled statement was pushed underneath the door, indicating the original amount of US$ 178 already previously billed to the credit card. But in actual fact this amount was changed to US$ 272 - a shocking US$ 96 more than what was originally quoted and confirmed on the internet! The reason being for all kinds of taxes and levies: city centre tax, luggage handling, development levy, tourist levy, WiFi availability and to conclude, an evening and morning newspaper; none of which were requested.

The moral of the story: by booking on the internet you cannot change any details afterwards and there are a lot of undisclosed extras to be added to your confirmed room rate.

CAR RENTAL

The client tried to make a reservation for a single journey day trip between Seward and Anchorage in Alaska, before leaving South Africa. Though Hertz is the only company serving Seward, the local representative was unable to confirm a vehicle, the arrival date of the cruise ship in Alaska. Eventually Mr Client succeeded in confirming a reservation for the car per internet. It was clear that the reservation would be a single journey, not returning the vehicle to Seward, that all basic insurance would be included and that the return time would be 18h00 in Anchorage. The confirmed cost for the intermediate 4x4 US$ 213.

The vehicle was returned at 17h40 at the required parking garage in Anchorage, only to find that Hertz’ offices close at 17h00! The half tank was specifically not refueled, because no indication could be found in the vehicle as to which of the five grades of fuel were applicable. The keys, contract and parking card were dropped in the box provided at the Hertz office. On their return to South Africa it was found that a shocking amount of US$ 478 showed on their credit card. The reason for the extras: an additional day charge, single journey levy, a full tank’s fuel charge, and additional access insurance.

Taking the above into consideration, you need to ask yourself the question:  Why book on the internet and have all these intricate problems when there are highly professional travel agents to handle your travel arrangements for you, thus saving you both time and money!!!

HEATHROW TO TAG BAGS

In an effort to reduce the number of missing passenger luggage moving through Heathrow Airport, bags are to be electronically tagged with radio frequency identification (RFID). Travellers' details, such as their name and destination, will be stored on computer chips attached to bag labels, which baggage handlers will be able to access using sensors at luggage terminals. The new technology will be run on a trial basis starting in October.

PASSENGER CHARGES ROCKET

PASSENGER service charges at SA airports are set to increase in October by 50% (to R105,26) for international flights; 49%, (to R79,82) for regional flights and 47% (to R38,59) for domestic flights. Acsa’s group executive corporate affairs, Solomon Makgale, told TNN that although this set of increases for 2007 was between 45% and 50%, the average yearly increase for the  five-year cycle would be 11%. He said the increases were necessary in view of Acsa’s infrastructure needs between 2008 and 2012.
